1. INDUCTIVE COUPLING ONTO POWER CABLE

Problem: Conducted emissions from a device under test were relatively high and exceeding the limit by some 10dB. Close inspection of the layout and cable route for the power cables revealed that the exiting cables were closely coupled to the mains transformer.

Solution: Maximising the separation of these cables from the transformer caused the conducted emissions amplitude to drop below the limit.

Explanation: Inductive coupling onto the exiting cables was causing the device to fail, highlighting the importance of forethought regarding cable layout and routing. These types of solutions are "freebies" requiring no new components or filtering. Bad design can make these types of fixes difficult to effect, especially when there is very little room or time to manoeuvre.
