Radiation [WINDOWS-1252?] Protection Directory endorsed at Australian Health Minister’s Conference
At its meeting on 29 July [WINDOWS-1252?] 2004 the Australian Health Ministers’ Conference endorsed Edition 1 of the National Directory for Radiation Protection. As a result, the ARPANSA Radiation Safety Protection Standard 2002 will be adopted in all Australian regulatory frameworks. The implications of this decision for local government are significant. Apart from the fact that the ARPANSA Standard is already the applicable Australian Standard for insurance and OHS purposes, all Commonwealth, state and territory legislation will now be amended to expressly adopt the requirements of the Standard. This means councils will need to explore options for developing cumulative assessments of radiation emissions from communications sites on land or buildings which they own and ensure compliance on properties on which they are site occupants.
