What is a PHANTOM?

The phantoms are human body cavity models containing a tissue simulating liquid of equivalent dielectric parameters to that of homogenous biological tissue.  The dielectric liquid closely approximates the density and conductivity of human blood and tissue.  The thickness of the phantom and its dielectric characteristics are exactly defined by the standards.  Body symmetry is explored in the whole body phantoms and a computer controlled robot-mounted probe is used to plot the electromagnetic field density, yielding whole-body 3-D field maps when reflected in the centre sagittal plane.

Similarly, head phantoms are used to map the electromagnetic field in the human head caused by mobile phones and other communications equipment such as UHF radios and cordless telephones.  The industry standard SAM phantom called up by EN50361 and IEEE 1528, is used for SAR evaluation of devices used at the head.
